Ownicon Beat

Ownicon Beat is a "Metroidvania" game in development by Ownicon, and this Wiki primarily serves as its design document.
The player controls three smug characters who are in way over their heads. Known as the Boat Havers, these three have sailed on their boat to reach the city Anglomede, and conquer it.
"What's the big deal? What makes this game conceptually unique? Make a list for me."
- Our subway system is really cool.
- You can tactically leap-frog through the game with your characters, controlling one at a time; perhaps using one to heal, one who thrives when health is critically low, and one to set everything on fire.
- You can switch to one character and buy things while another is riding the trains in real-time, and come back to him—wherever the train has brought him—later, to cover 50 km distances in an unforgiving Metroid-esque setting with no quick-travel.
- Control scheme is built around really weird ideas, like being disrespectful to your friend's corpse, and flattering merchants on the phone while parrying boss attacks.
- Certain enemies will chase and hunt you across the absurdly large, empty city.
- Combat, as we envision it, is a sort of "Tales of / Symphony of the Night / Smash Bros" fighting-game RPG hybrid, which we don't think has never been done quite this way before.
- Game has been designed around a full cooperative two-player mode
- Numerous unlockables; most notably, a handful of playable characters, New Game + content, and a second story mode
I also have some confidence in our absurd characters, but, that's something you can look around the Wiki to get a handle on, and see for yourself.
Technical and release information
The game is C++ based, in development for both OS X and Windows, and will come out in the year 2047 AD. It will also be rather cheap. Personally, I'd like to price it at "$10 but perpetually 75% off, wink wink," although it might be bad to say that out loud. There will be no DRM.
A free version of Beat will be made available, too; perhaps where the whole game may be completed, though with some significant limitations, like... perhaps no NG+ or unlockables. We'll call this Beat Free, and put it out of mind for now. I would also hope to release the game's source code, eventually. Free and open elements are important to me, because I would love nothing more than to add unconditional value to this shitty planet. But we also like money.
The game is not very far along. Please note that this isn't really a promotional Wiki or intended for readers, but rather, just a private site that we never bothered to hide from unregistered users. Only this one page is written for the unlikely visitor. There are spoilers all over the place, and new things are written as we come up with them and as we rethink our game features, so the site can be inconsistent at times.
